Bluewater Health Project Continues To Move Forward

Contractors bidding on the Bluewater Health redevelopment project have requested three additional weeks to complete their proposals to build and finance the project.

Bidders have requested a second extension to the bidding deadline to allow subcontractors to provide their pricing information.  Bluewater Health and Infrastructure Ontario have granted an extension from March 7, 2007 to March 29, 2007.  The subcontractors pricing information is an important element to the bid submissions and will ensure a range of comprehensive and competitively priced submissions.

The Ontario government and Bluewater Health are committed to moving this project forward to bring improved access to healthcare to the region.

Construction is scheduled to begin in Summer 2007.

The Bluewater Health project will involve the construction of a new, five-storey building as well as renovations to the Norman Street and Russell Street buildings. Once complete, the expanded hospital will house a larger, more modern Emergency department, eight redeveloped operating rooms and a consolidated maternal infant child department which will, for the first time, offer labour, birthing and paediatric services on one floor.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Bluewater Health to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects -- ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Bluewater Health project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
